Is the USB Type-C interface flawless? Be especially careful about these five points

Among the new mobile phones released in the second half of this year, those using USB Type-C interfaces and traditional micro USB interfaces account for roughly half each. Most mobile phones using Type-C interfaces are domestically produced, while older mobile phone manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola, and Sony still use traditional micro USB interfaces. In other words, the industry's initial analysis that Type-C would explode in the second half of this year did not materialize. At first glance, Type-C does have many advantages that micro USB does not, such as being able to plug in regardless of direction, and significant improvements in both transmission speed and charging speed. However, the large-scale popularization of Type-C may take some time, it is not flawless, and there are still many obstacles for ordinary consumers. Type-C does not mean faster charging speed. As mentioned above, Type-C can provide faster charging speeds, which is true, but this is only the case for Type-C that meets the USB 3.1 standard. USB 3.1 supports the USB-PD (Power Delivery) power supply standard, with a maximum power supply of up to 100 watts (W), and the charging speed will indeed be greatly improved. However, for mobile phones with only USB 2.0 standard Type-C interfaces, true fast charging is not supported. The most obvious example is the OnePlus 2. In fact, we have not yet encountered a Type-C mobile phone that truly supports fast charging. Type-C does not mean that data transmission will be faster. Similarly, Type-C supports faster data transmission speeds, which also refers to interfaces that meet the USB 3.1 standard. Many devices currently using Type-C interfaces do not use the USB 3.1 standard; only the appearance has changed. Moreover, even if your Type-C is a standard USB 3.1 interface, most computers and other devices on the market are still mainly based on the USB 2.0 standard, and the transmission speed cannot be increased. Type-C is not compatible with existing micro USB devices. Imagine that if you are using a mobile phone with a Type-C interface and happen to forget to bring your data cable and charger on a business trip, when you want to borrow from someone nearby, you find that others do not have such a data cable. At the same time, you may have a large number of micro USB interface accessories and devices, but when you switch to using Type-C, you will find that these devices seem to have become a pile of garbage. Type-C accessories are expensive. We all say that rare things are precious, and Type-C accessories are no exception. Taking Apple's official USB-C AV video adapter, specifically designed for MacBook, which can achieve HDMI, standard USB 3.1, and USB-C output through the USB-C interface, as an example, it allows the MacBook to connect to an external display at 4K/60Hz or 1080P/30Hz and also serves as a general USB device, and also has external power supply. However, its Price is as high as 588 yuan, which is almost the Price of a mainstream domestic smartphone under 1,000 yuan. Type-C security is worrying. Due to the openness and flexibility of Type-C, it is more susceptible to large-scale attacks, especially when facing BadUSB vulnerabilities. Hackers can bypass the data reading area and store malicious code in the firmware storage area of the USB device controller, allowing users to infect electronic devices with malicious code before they discover it. The worst part is that even if we find that our device has been infected with BadUSB, ordinary antivirus software or formatting operations cannot remove the code, and security experts say that the possibility of fixing the BadUSB vulnerability is very small. However, using a USB interface requires compliance with USB standards, which poses certain hidden dangers that all manufacturers cannot avoid.
